MONOMOY GIRL, ridden by Florent Geroux, overtook WONDER GADOT turning for home and repelled all challengers to win the 35th running of the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff today at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Brad Cox for a four-way partnership Monomoy Girl returned $5.60 as the favorite in a field of 11 fillies and mares after finishing 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.79 over a fast track. WOW CAT closed stoutly to finish second, a length behind the winner, while MIDNIGHT BISOU rallied to nip BLUE PRIZE for third.
The top-5 order was 11-9-7-10-4.
ABEL TASMAN, the 2017 Ky. Oaks winner and 2-1 second choice, faltered badly, with Mike Smith not persisting with her in the final furlong.
Nicole Russo will have the full Distaff recap before too long on www.drf.com.
