LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Enable became the first horse to win France’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Breeders’ Cup Turf in the same season by defeating a stubborn Magical in Saturday's $4 million race.
Enable, a two-time Arc winner, had to work to improve her record to 10 wins from 11 starts, getting pushed very wide on the last of three turns after laying in a stalking position, and then continuing well out in the center of the course down the stretch. She won by three-quarters of a length, with a gap of nine lengths back to third-place Sadler's Joy, the top-finishing American.
Arklow ran fourth, followed by Waldgeist in fifth.
It was the second Breeders' Cup win of the day for owner Juddmonte Farm and jockey Frankie Dettori, who teamed to win the Mile with Expert Eye.
Dettori, never one to cap his emotion, was overjoyed. "She conquered America," he exclaimed.
Enable ($3.60), a 4-year-old daughter of Nathaniel trained by John Gosden, raced 1 1/2 miles in 2:32.65 over a course labeled "good" on track, but called yielding by Equibase chartcallers.
