The predicted storm has come to fruition and already is altering life here at Del Mar, where the four races scheduled for the turf have been moved to the main track. Fortunately Del Mar made this call well before 8:30, which is the deadline for horsemen to give Lasix shots to horses in the day's first race. Expect a number of scratches with half the card now having a change of surface.
With Grade 1 races like the Hollywood Derby on Saturday and Matriarch on Sunday, it seemed likely Del Mar management would want to limit action on a water-logged grass course and not have it get chewed up in advance of the biggest races of the season this weekend.
The main track is closed for training this morning and is sealed, so I'd expect it to be rated something along the lines of sloppy/sealed for the first race, at 12:30.
