Hawthorne had to cancel the last five races on their card Thursday because of unsafe track conditions created by a thawing racing surface, and Friday the same thing happened again, this time after just one race. The mercury rose well over 40 degrees Friday days after night-time lows in the mid-teens and a considerable amount of snow. The moisture in the ground that had frozen through Wednesday all has thawed now creating a wet mess of a racing surface.
The early daily double paid on 1 with all while any other wager involving races beyond the first is due to be refunded.
Racing is scheduled to resume Saturday though rain could complicate things tomorrow, as well.
The cancellation of 12 races right now won't be a bad thing for the Hawthorne racing office, actually. Fields of late, with many barns having left town for the winter, have grown distressingly thin and it appears to be a hard slog filling just 25 races a racing week at a meet that runs through the end of the year.
