A cloudy day in Toronto, with an east wind. Rain is in the forecast for tonight.
Jockey Eurico Da Silva and trainer Norm McKnight are both closing in on the Woodbine meet record for most wins in their respective categories.
Da Silva's hat trick yesterday left him three wins shy of the record of 221, set by Mickey Walls in 1991. The '91 meet, from April 28-Oct. 27, was approximately 125 days, and the current meet is scheduled for 133 days.
Da Silva, who has a typically busy day, will ride 6-1 shot Blessed Two in the featured $100K Kingarive Stakes.
McKnight's 115 win total is four shy of Mark Casse's record of 119 victories, set in 2011. He sends out the stakes-winning sprinter Silent Mistake, who will take on the boys in her first start around two turns in the 1 1/16-mile Kingarvie. Expect her to set the pace under Gary Boulanger, who chose her over Blessed Two.
The protagonists in the Kingarvie are My Silencer and Dun Drum, who ran one-two in the seven-furlong Frost King, another Ontario-sired 2yo stakes. Both have worked well for their first two-turn attempt. Victor's Dynasty was a decisive second-out maiden breaker going three-quarters, and is bred for the task at hand.
The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover for the 11th race is $23K. Da Silva will pilot the dropping favorite Two Timing in the $10K maiden sprint.
