Nitrous, who ran third in last year's Grade 1 Hopeful at Saratoga, will make his two-turn debut Sunday in the $100,000 Riley Allison Derby at Sunland Park. The race is the first of two local preps for the Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Park Derby.
The Riley Allison, at a mile, drew a field of 10. Nitrous will break from post 8. Trainer Steve Asmussen has given the mount to Luis Contreras.
The race also drew Sheriff Brown, a half-brother to Runaway Ghost, the winner of last year's Sunland Derby.
The card Sunday includes the $65,000 Borderplex, which is a local steppingstone to the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks.
