The final four races on Friday's opening day card at Oaklawn are restricted to 3-year-olds, topped by the $150,000 Smarty Jones. The track remains fast on what has been a sunny, crisp afternoon in Hot Springs, Ark. Below is a look a the races:
*The sixth race is the second half of a split maiden special weight sprint for 3-year-old fillies. Trainer Dan Peitz will attempt to sweep both divisions after taking the fourth race with Shahazard. In this spot, he sends out Palace Princess, who is a first-time starter from a Grade 2-placed filly he had a few years back in Arienza. Irish Mischief gets the nod off a runner-up finish in her debut last out at Churchill. She's out of a stakes winner of $238K.
The seventh race is an optional $62,500 claiming sprint over five and a half furlongs and Peruvian Appeal is moving back into the overnight ranks for the race after a stakes-placing at Tampa. Horses who last raced at Tampa often fare well on the sand-based track at Oaklawn, chief among them last year's Arkansas Derby winner, Magnum Moon. Kada is another chief contender Friday at Oaklawn.
The eighth is the Smarty Jones. Gray Attempt has a chance to wire the field in a race that ends at the sixteenth pole. He owns the field's best last-race Beyer Figure, a 92, for his win in the Sugar Bowl, a sprint stakes at Fair Grounds. The ninth race is a maiden special weight over a mile and a sixteenth. The field includes Stolen Thunder, a son of the Grade 1-winning mare Seattle Smooth.
