Cherry Lodge led from start to finish on Saturday at Gulfstream Park to win the $150,000 Ladies Turf Sprint, which was a five-furlong sprint but wasn't on turf after being moved to the main track following steady rain since last night.
With Jose Ortiz up, Cherry Lodge ($5.60) set fractions of 22.27 for the opening quarter and 44.69 for the half with Just Talkin in closest pursuit. Just Talkin tried valiantly to close the gap, but Cherry Lodge maintained a margin of about two lengths to the wire. It was a long way back to third-place Razorback Lady.
Cherry Lodge completed fuve furlongs on the sloppy, sealed track in 57.10 seconds.
The original field of 10 was reduced by half once the race was moved to dirt. Among the scratches were the Peter Miller-trained duo of Surrender Now and Painting Corners.
Todd Pletcher trains Cherry Lodge for Gainesway Stable. A 5-year-old daughter of Bernardini, Cherry Lodge has now won four times in 10 starts. She was third in this race last year, when it was run on turf.
