Trainer Mike Maker teamed up with the Ortiz brothers to finish first and second with Zulu Alpha and Soglio in the Grade 3 McKnight. Hunting Horn finished third.
Zulu Alpha, the 2-1 favorite, was exiting a solid effort in the Grade 2 Ft. Lauderdale. He benefitted from an absolutely perfectly judged ride by Irad Ortiz Jr. who allowed him to save ground while rating just off the pace set by Maker's third entrant in the field, the 99-1 All Go. Zulu Alpha tipped out to go after the leader into the stretch, edged clear then withstood a late bid from his stable mate Soglio to win by a half length. Jose Ortiz rode Soglio who finished second for the third straight in stakes races over the last 10 weeks. It was another 3 1/2 lengths further back to Hunting Horn.
Zulu Alpha paid $6.60. The final time for the race, which had to be hand timed after the Trakus timer failed, was still to be determined.
Marty McGee will have that final time and more details on the McKnight coming up shortly at drf.com
