Mother Nature dealt Gulfstream Park a severe blow on Saturday with soaking rain having a profound impact on wagering totals for what was originally a blockbuster 12 race Pegasus day program.
With three races taken off the turf, including two stakes, a yielding course for the remaining turf events and a sloppy main track, overall handle was down 10 per cent to $37.786 million compared to the record $41.983 million wagered on the 2018 Pegasus card. On-track handle was nearly equal, $4.12 million on Saturday compared to $4.13 millon in 2018.
"Despite the fact we had three races taken off the turf with numerous scratches, and a sloppy main track, it was still a great day of racing and the handle was strong, considering the unfortunate circumstances," said Gulfstream Park General Manger Bill Badgett.
