With persistent rain in the last 30 minutes, Santa Anita officials announced at 2:26 p.m. that the seventh and ninth races have been moved from the hillside turf course to 6 1-2 furlongs on the main track, which is wet-fast.
The seventh race is the $100,000 Sweet Life Stakes, which was rated as a Grade 3, but will lose that grade because of the surface switch. The American Graded Stakes Committee will assess the race in coming days for a possible restoration of Grade 3 status.
The decision to switch the races from turf to the main track was made after the fourth race, the start of the 20-cent Rainbow pick six. The decision was made before the start of the 50-cent late pick five in the fifth race and the 50-cent late pick four in the sixth race.
