Racing will resume at four venues in Great Britain on Wednesday after six days of cancellations caused by Equine Influenza positives detected last week.
The British Horseracing Authority announced the resumption of racing late Monday evening in a statement, emphasizing that safeguards will be put in place to determine which stables can participate. The decision was made after consultations with the BHA's veterinary committee and after thousands of tests for Equine Influenza were conducted in recent days by the Animal Health Trust.
Since Wednesday, 10 horses have tested positive for Equine Influenza.
In its statement, the BHA stated that protocols were being discussed late Monday on which trainers will be allowed to have runners, depending on "the level of risk they have been exposed to. The ability of runners to return to racing from those yards will depend on the risk categories the yards are placed in.
"We are finalizing overnight which category individual trainers will currently be placed in. The BHA will contact trainers tomorrow morning to inform them of their category and eligibility to run."
Wednesday, jump racing will be held at Musselburgh and Plumpton, while all-weather flat meetings are scheduled for Kempton and Southwell.
The BHA has ordered that horses entered to race must have been vaccinated for Equine Influenza in the last six months. Trainers will be required to produce documentation of such vaccinations when horses are shipped to racetracks.
“The BHA and the veterinary committee agree that, on balance, the level of risk is acceptable for a return to racing," said David Sykes, the BHA's director of equine health and welfare. “We have developed a risk model, which the veterinary committee support, in order to assist the return to racing.
“We will observe closely those horses who are taken to the racecourse and will intervene as a precaution to prevent a horse running or accessing a racecourse if we believe it might put other horses at risk of infection."
The resumption of racing comes four weeks before the National Hunt Festival at Cheltenham from March 12-15. Key prep races for that meeting were cancelled last weekend, but have been rescheduled for coming days, the BHA said in its statement.
