Quip wasn't shipped to Fair Grounds from Florida for the Mineshaft Handicap, a race in which he was entered last Saturday, owing to a wide draw. Trainer Rodolphe Brisset said that Quip instead would make his first start since the 2018 Preakness Stakes in the Hal's Hope Stakes at Gulfsftream Park.
Bell's the One also is in danger of missing an intended stakes start Saturday in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes after becoming sick. The 3-year-old filly, who has won three sprints to start her career, missed the Silverbulletday Stakes last month with an illness, as well. Trainer Neil Pessin said Bell's the One appeared Thursday to be past the illness but the filly missed a scheduled workout last weekend. Pessin said a final decision on her Rachel Alexandra status would be made Friday afternoon.
It's been known since Sunday that trainer Bob Baffert's entrants in Saturday's stakes, Chasing Yesterday for the Rachel Alexandra and Kingly for the Risen Star, weren't coming from California.
