Three-year-old colt Get the Prize's front-running first-out 2 3/4-length score in race 3 at Fair Grounds obviously came with a fast raw time - 1:09.85 for six furlongs. That clocking took on even more shine after race 3, a 3-year-old filly maiden-special at the same distance, was won by Weabie in 1:11.38. (One to watch from R5 - Bangle Gal, who was slow into stride, steadied to the back after a half-furlong, passed a bunch of horses wide on the turn, and was between horses late to finish third.)
Trained by Al Stall, Get the Prize is by Candy Ride out Hondo's Way, by Giant's Causeway. He broke like a rocket under Miguel Mena, set a strong pace, and had plenty left in sharp debut. Cost $410K as a 2yo and should go at least a mile.
Three dirt races into the card and nothing has done much closing, while the surface is one of the quicker tracks we've seen here all meet.
