Harlan Punch sustained a significant injury Saturday at Fair Grounds during the Mineshaft Handicap, in which he finished second, but the problem, while potentially career-ending, is not life-threatening. Radiographs taken Saturday of Harlan Punch's lower left foreleg revealed no fractures, trainer Brad Cox said. Further diagnostics evaluated Sunday suggested a tendon injury. Harlan Punch as of Sunday remained in his stall at Fair Grounds. Cox said the gelding could be shipped sometime soon to Kentucky.
"I think he's well enough to travel," Cox said.
Harlan Punch was getting out into the first turn of the Mineshaft but that is a longs-standing habit of his, and Harlan Punch has raced in a run-out blinker try and keep him from heading to the outside. The gelding finished the race without further incident but went lame as jockey Florent Geroux galloped him back to be unsaddled. The affected limb was splinted and Harlan Punch was vanned off the course.
