Jockey Victor Espinoza rode Gallantlystreaming to a second-place finish in a maiden claimer on the hillside turf course, the Hall of Famer's first ride since July.
Espinoza injured his spine in a morning accident at Del Mar last August and underwent months of rehab to prepare for his return.
Gallantlystreaming, the 4-5 favorite, was fifth on the hillside and closed steadily through the stretch to finish second to Queen of the Track ($21.80) by 2 3-4 lengths.
Espinoza said he planned to stalk the pace and hoped Queen of the Track would be unable to sustain her advantage.
"She was a little farther in front than I wanted," he said.
"I feel good. I am pretty fit and I came back 100 percent."
Espinoza will resume riding this weekend, though he is not booked on any mounts on Friday's nine-race program.
