Gray Attempt being pointed for Rebel at Oaklawn

Gray Attempt, the multiple stakes winner who had costly trouble in the first turn of the Southwest Stakes on Monday at Oaklawn, is being pointed for the track's Grade 2, $1 million Rebel, trainer Jinks Fires said Wednesday.

Gray Attempt ended up 11th in the Southwest following a trip in which Fires said the horse was "sawed off" into the first turn and as a result was unable to change leads at the proper time. The horse ended up wide in the first turn.

"He's got hide off one tendon," Fires said. "It looks like he's going to be okay. He's walking sound. He's got some hair off an ankle. I think he's okay."

Fires said he will know more when the horse resumes training. He said if all is well, the plan is to advance to the Rebel.

Gray Attempt won the Smarty Jones, a points race for the Kentucky Derby, in January at Oaklawn. He also captured the Sugar Bowl in December at Fair Grounds over Super Steed, who won the Southwest on Monday.
