Dessman, second in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes on Feb. 10, has been withdrawn from an allowance race with an $80,000 claiming option for 3-year-olds on Friday because of a minor setback, trainer Bob Baffert.
"I think he kicked a wall or something," Baffert said. "He did something, but nothing serious. We don't want to take any chances. He'll be all right."
Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa al Maktoum, Dessman was beaten a nose by Sparky Ville in the San Vicente Stakes at seven furlongs. His absence leaves the one-mile optional claimer with five runners, led by Roadster, who was third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity in his last start in September, and Nolo Contesto, a well-regarded maiden race winner in January.
