Australia: Winx wins 31st consecutive race in Chipping Norton

Winx extended her winning streak to an astonishing 31 races with a comfortable win in Saturday's Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes at Royal Randwick in greater Sydney, Australia.

The immensely-popular 8-year-old mare closed from fourth in the one-mile race to catch pacesetter Happy Clapper in the final quarter-mile and win by about two lengths over that rival.

There was a brief moment of suspense in early stretch when Happy Clapper led by about three lengths. Jockey Hugh Bowman aboard Winx got an immediate response when he urged his mount to reach the front well in time.

"She had the energy required to reel him in," Bowman said. "Although I was pushing her, she did it with relative ease. If I had struck her as I've done before, she would have found another couple of lengths for me."

The $427,680 Chipping Norton Stakes was Winx's second win of 2019. She won the Group 2 Apollo Stakes at seven furlongs at Randwick on Feb. 16 in her first start since a record-breaking fourth win in the Group 1 Cox Plate at Mooney Valley Racecourse last October. The Cox Plate is Australia's leading weight-for-age race.

Winx is trained by Chris Waller, who started six of the seven runners in the Chipping Norton. Happy Clapper was the only horse in the field not trained by Waller. Happy Clapper is trained by Patrick Webster.

Saturday's Chipping Norton was Winx's 23rd win in a Group 1 race, a record. She surpasses the 22 Grade 1 races won by Irish hurdler Hurricane Fly in England and France from 2008-15.

Waller said the Chipping Norton performance will help Winx's preparation for her final two starts.

"It was a good test for her and it will bring her on nicely for her next couple of runs," Waller said. "We didn't want to have a walk in the park by any means because they need stimulating and we can't do it at home. They need to do it under race conditions to get that final bit of fitness into them."

Winx is scheduled to have her next start in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at 7 1-2 furlongs at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on March 23. She is expected to have her final start in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 13.
