Tax looks like he has moved forward off his head victory over Not That Brady in last month's Grade 3 Withers Stakes.
For the second straight week, Tax put in a fast workout, drilling five furlongs in 59.60 seconds over Belmont Park's main track. He is pointing to the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 6.
Saturday, Tax broke off from the half-mile pole and shaded 23 seconds for the opening quarter. He hit the wire in 46.42 seconds and then proceeded to go another furlong in 13.18. He wasn't asked at any point by his exercise rider Rolando Quevedo.
Now, the Belmont main track was extremely fast Saturday morning, perhaps the fastest it's been all winter. But this was a very good work and it was the second straight week Tax worked well. Last week, when he picked up some unexpected company, Tax went a half-mile in 48.47 seconds and galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.86 in what was his first work since the Withers.
Trainer Danny Gargan said Quevedo told him on Saturday "he never moved on him. [Tax] didn't want to stop.
"I'm really happy with him, he's doing so good right now," Gargan said.
Tax was claimed for $50,000 out of a victory going 1 1-16 miles at Keeneland last October. Tax finished third to Maximus Mischief in the Remsen at 1 1-8 miles before rallying along the rail and beating Not That Brady -- entered in today's Grade 3 Gotham _ in the Withers.
