Saturday was an unusually busy day in regard to the Ky. Derby Future Wager, where sometimes most of the 23 individually listed horses are idle on a weekend that happens to coincide with the customary 3-day wagering window for any given pool. Pool 4 opened Friday and doesn't close until today at 6 p.m. ET, but with the Wood, Blue Grass, and SA Derby now in the books, bettors have had a chance to digest the performances of the 9 horses who raced yesterday -- and not only were there some changes in the before/after odds, but more could be in store today.
As of Sunday morning, and with $154,381 in the win pool, SA Derby runner-up GAME WINNER is holding sway as the 5-1 favorite over MAXIMUM SECURITY (7-1), winner of the Fla. Derby last weekend. The mutuel field is 14-1. During pools such as this, with so much Saturday activity, the win and exacta pools figure to at least double from their current levels when betting is done today.
I jotted down the odds yesterday at 5:55 ET, just before the Wood was run, and here follows how the odds changed from that time to now. The biggest odds changes, understandably, involved the three race winners: TACITUS, VEKOMA, and ROADSTER:
GAME WINNER (2nd SA Derby): was 4-1, now 5-1
HAIKAL (3rd Wood): was 23-1, now 31-1
INSTAGRAND (3rd SA Derby): was 29-1, now 38-1
OUTSHINE (10th Wood): was 40-1, now 61-1
ROADSTER (1st SA Derby): was 13-1, now 7-1
SIGNALMAN (3rd Blue Grass): was 50-1, now 58-1
TACITUS (1st Wood): was 18-1, now 10-1
VEKOMA (1st Blue Grass): was 50-1, now 17-1
WIN WIN WIN (2nd Blue Grass): was 40-1, now 24-1
