The New York stewards suspended jockey Nik Juarez 15 racing days and fined him $2,500 for his ride aboard Joevia in Saturday's Grade 2 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. The suspension would be reduced to 10 racing days if Juarez waives his right of appeal.
Walter Blum Jr., the agent for Juarez -- who rode Sunday at Gulfstream -- had not yet spoken to Juarez about whether he wants to appeal. Juarez has until Wednesday to inform the stewards whether he plans to appeal.
The stewards spoke to Juarez via phone on Sunday. Jimmy Edwards, the Jockey Club steward at Aqueduct, said Juarez was "very apologetic. He owned it all. He knew he was wrong."
Juarez was aboard Joevia, who had post 11 in the Wood. Once the gates opened, Juarez immediately attempted to get over but impeded several horses in the process. Joevia finished 11th but the stewards disqualified him and ordered him unplaced in the order of finish.
