Santa Anita officials announced on Sunday that the $75,000 Mizdirection Stakes for fillies and mares will be run at five furlongs on turf.
The race was originally scheduled for about 6 1-2 furlongs on the hillside turf course, but racing on the hillside was suspended after the March 31 program after Arms Runner suffered a fatal injury in the Grade 3 San Simeon Stakes that day.
The hillside is not being used at all. An allowance race with a $40,000 claiming option on Sunday was originally scheduled for 1 1-4 miles on turf, but the distance was changed to 1 1-8 miles before entries were taken on Thursday. Races at 1 1-4 miles on turf start on the hillside. Races at 1 1-8 miles on turf actually start on the final turn of the main track. The field joins the turf course after a few strides.
Tim Ritvo, the chief operating officer of The Stronach Group, the parent company of Santa Anita, said on Sunday that there are no immediate plans to resume racing on the hillside turf course.
