Winx, the brilliant Australian mare, won her final start and 33rd consecutive race, in Saturday's Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick Racecourse outside of Sydney.
Ridden by her regular rider Hugh Bowman, Winx gave her typical brilliant rally, closing from sixth in a field of nine to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at 1 1-4 miles on turf by about two lengths over Kluger.
"She's just an amazing horse for everybody to be part of," said her emotional trainer, Chris Waller. "I'm a small cog in the wheel.
"My team does an amazing job. It's rare they get the accolades they deserve. Racing for four years at the very best, it's indescribable."
Winx won her 25th Group 1 race in the $2.86 million Queen Elizabeth and gave Waller his 100th career Group 1 win.
Bowman had Winx in sixth in a field of nine on the backstretch and moved into contention with a wide rally on the turn. Winx challenged for the lead with a five-wide move entering the stretch and was in front with about a furlong remaining.
The Australian Horse of the Year for the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons, Winx won the 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes for the 17th win of the streak and the 2018 running for the 25th win.
The winning streak began in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas at Sunshine Coast Racecourse on May 16, 2015. Aside from the longevity of the streak, Winx is best known for winning a record four consecutive runnings of the Group 1 Cox Plate from 2015-18, Australia’s top weight-for-age race. Winx has been Australia’s Horse of the Year for the last three seasons and will earn the same honor for this campaign.
