LEXINGTON, Ky. – Owendale circled the field wide on the second turn on his way to defeating Anothertwistafate and Sueno in Saturday's Grade 3, $200,000 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland.
The Lexington marked the first stakes victory for Owendale, who secured 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points with his triumph. His 20-point overall point total is below the customary threshold to gain entry in the Derby, which typically oversubscribes.
In defeat, runner-up Anothertwistafate added 8 Derby points, and improved his Derby tally to 38 - making him a potential "bubble horse" for the Run for the Roses. Third-place Sueno picked up 4 points to now stand at 32.
Anothertwistafate ran well in defeat, losing by 1 3/4 lengths to Owendale after being boxed in for much of the race before finding room along the inside down the stretch.
The winner, a 3-year-old son of Into Mischief trained by Brad Cox, raced 1 1/16 miles under Florent Geroux in 1:44.14, returning $27.40.
This marked the 38th running of the Lexington, which was used as a final prep by Derby winners Swale in 1984 and Charismatic in 1999. Last year's winner was My Boy Jack, who ended up fifth in the Derby.
