For yesterday's Lexington Stakes at Keeneland to have any representation in next month's Kentucky Derby, at least a few defections from the current list of Derby prospects need to take place in the coming weeks.
Owendale, the winner, seems more of a Preakness candidate, having just 20 Kentucky Derby qualifying points, all earned in the Lexington. But runner-up Anothertwistafate (38 points) and third-place Sueno (32) are not without hope of making the Derby starting gate. They are 23rd and 24th on the leaderboard, as of the end of racing on Saturday.
“He will spend a couple more days here and then go to Churchill maybe Tuesday or Wednesday,” trainer Blaine Wright told Keeneland publicity in Lexington, Ky. on Sunday morning. “We planned to go to Churchill no matter what, so now we will take a wait-and-see approach.”
Anothertwistafate was boxed in for much of the Lexington, a difficult trip for a speed horse, and finished evenly along the inside once clear.
“If he doesn’t get in, we still have the Preakness,” Wright said of Anothertwistafate, who gained an automatic berth in that race by winning the El Camino Real Derby in February at Golden Gate.
As for Sueno, he is already in Louisville.
“He got back to Churchill last night, and he came out of the race great,” said Julie Clark, assistant to trainer Keith Desormeaux. “Now we will keep our fingers crossed.”
