Secret Spice and Paradise Woods, first and third last month in the Grade 1 Beholder Mile, head the list of 14 fillies and mares nominated to the Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Margarita Stakes on April 27 at Santa Anita.
Secret Spice could skip the local race and run May 3 in the Grade 1, $500,000 La Troienne at Churchill Downs, but Paradise Woods is expected to stay home. Based on an improved effort in the Beholder, and her customary fast workouts since, Paradise Woods could inherit the role of favorite in the mile and one-eighth Santa Margarita. Paradise Woods, who posted two bullet works since raced, is scheduled to work again Saturday for trainer John Shirreffs.
Danuska’s My Girl, recent upset winner of a highly rated Grade 3 sprint, nominated to the Santa Margarita, along with Grade 2 winner Mopotism. The remaining nominees include Birdie Gold, Exuberance, Foxtail, Just a Smidge, La Force, Lemoona, Queen Bee to You, Starr of Quality, Stradella Road and Withholding Info. Stradella Road is favored Saturday in a turf allowance (race 8) at Santa Anita.
