Mitole gave trainer Steve Asmussen, jockey Ricardo Santana Jr., and owners Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt a sweep of the day's Grade 1 races for older sprinters when capturing the $500,000 Churchill Downs, two races after the same connections scored in the Humana Distaff for females with Mia Mischief.
Mitole ($6.40), the favorite, has emerged as one of if not the best sprinter in the country. This was his sixth straight win dating back to March of 2018, and he is now 3 for 3 this year, having captured the Count Fleet at Oaklawn in his prior start.
In this race, though, he succesfully stretched out to seven furlongs and got a significant Grade 1 win.
Mitole was always prominent while three paths wide but needed much of the stretch to get past a stubborn Bobby's Wicked One, who set the early pace of 22.38 seconds and 44.71 seconds for a half-mile while hounded by Promises Fulfilled. But once clearing Bobby's Wicked One near the sixteenth pole, Mitole poured it on and prevailed by 3 1/2 lengths.
Bobby's Wicked One held second by a half-length over Promises Fulfilled.
Mitole was timed in 1:21.21 on a track rated fast.
Mitole, 4, is a colt by Eskendereya. He has now won seven times in 10 starts.
David Grening will have a full recap of the race up soon at www.drf.com
