Before previewing Sunday at Santa Anita, quick notes regarding the Kentucky Derby:
* Maximum Security’s “victory” was superb. Under pressure throughout, only the second route of his career, seemingly defeated into the lane, “won” going away. Impressive.
* Game Winner’s wide-trip sixth was noteworthy. He could have made it a race.
* Churchill Downs stewards made the right call. Maximum Security had to come down.
* Would have appreciated Churchill Downs stewards fielding questions at the press briefing Saturday evening. Transparency is not high on racing’s priority list.
Preview, Sunday at Santa Anita ….
Race 1 – Foster Boi (7) will appreciate a return to turf, he is bred to route. Not giving away secrets on the favorite in this statebred turf mile, but won’t bet against him.
Race 2 – This handicapper would be more confident in “best bet” Street Image (1) in this maiden-50 sprint, except that trainer Peter Miller is 0-for-20 since April 19. Still believe Street Image is the right horse, but hesitant to take a short price on a stable in a funk.
Race 3 – Lone speed Swamp Souffle (4) might be gone in this N1X turf route, Euro-import Gregorian Chant (5) has worked very well. Will pass on Synthesis (1).
Race 5 – Maiden-claiming turf route, take your pick: Indoctrination (1), Ocean Fury (3), Boru (5) or Aussie Fox (7).
Race 6 – Want to bet on a first-time starter that has been breaking slowly from the gate in morning workouts? Of course not, although Arcaro (2) might be good enough to overcome an early misstep. A similar comment applies to top choice Beleth (5), who produced no speed in his runner-up debut. Suspect he wants to run long. This race is tricky, top pair tough to trust.
Race 7 – Meal Ticket (6) legit chalk in this N2X turf mile; Achira (3) worth a look at 6-1. She has trained well for her comeback, meets only one other front-runner. That is Ippodamia’s Girl (9), who reportedly has not trained well for her return.
Race 8 – Here’s a scary stat: since racing resumed at Santa Anita in late March, 21 of the 93 dirt races (22 percent) had five starters or less. Tough But Nice (3) is favored in this five-runner $16k claiming starter allowance. If he gets another easy lead he could win again. Depends on how much pressure Lucky Staxx (5) applies. Kochees (2) is this handicapper’s top choice at 7-2.
Race 9 – Jetovator (8) should be tough in this mile turf for statebred maidens, based on his third-place debut. He’ll have to catch likely pacesetter Hit the Seam (2).
