Santa Anita Saturday preview

Handicapping notes, Saturday at Santa Anita …

Race 1 – If she clears this maiden turf sprint, Our Romance (3) can be gone. However, firster Rosey Sky (4) is ready to roll. Her half-mile work May 4 with jockey Alonso Quinonez (viewed on XBTV.com) was outstanding. Rosey Sky also worked an unrecorded quarter-mile from the gate on May 9 according to workout analyst Andy Harrington, who wrote that Rosey Sky “looks to have sharp gate speed.” Bottom line: Rosey Sky is “live.”

Race 2 – Handicapping author Steve Davidowitz, who passed away last month, was one of the first to chronicle the “key race” concept. That is, a race that produces multiple winners. Davidowitz might endorse The Rule of King’s (1) in this claiming sprint. He finished fourth last out in a starter allowance that produced four next-out winners.

Race 3 – Surface (4) made the Daily Racing Form “horses to watch” list following her fifth-place debut in which she ran the final three furlongs of the mile-and-one-eighth turf race in a sharp :35.54. Since then, on May 4, she worked (dirt) in company with G2-winning comebacker Liam the Charmer. The filly was going easier than her “classier” older male rival. Can we really get 5-1 on Surface? Probably not. Will settle for 3-1.

Race 4 – Maiden 3-year-olds at a mile. Not in love with top choice Always Forgiven (4) or second preference Time Is Now (2). Tempted to wimp out and use “all.”

Race 5 – Queen Bee to You (6) will skip the G3 Santa Barbara and run Sunday in the Fran’s Valentine Stakes. Her defection leaves Animosity (1) as the controlling speed in the Santa Barbara. Not sure if it matters, because favorite Causeforcommotion (2) will not be far away. Two-horse race, it seems.

Race 6 – How good is Ce Ce (3)? Based on her outstanding debut victory, the 3-year-old filly might be any type. The well-bred filly, sibling to Papa Clem, is favored in this N1X sprint and looks tough to beat. The maiden race she won produced two next-out winners.

Race 7 – At his 4-1 program odds, Foray (8) is an appealing gamble in this starter allowance. Big win last out, he should be forwardly placed in a turf mile without much speed. All three turf miles Friday (rails 10 feet) were won by horses positioned one-two. Similar configuration Saturday, rails at zero.

Race 8 – Five-horse field.

Race 9 – Second-time starters Music to My Ears (3) and Babael (2), listed at 5-1 and 7-2 respectively, have trained well for their first start since August. Both are “live” in this maiden turf sprint, while first-time starter Rayray (5) also has worked well. He is trained by Mark Glatt, whose first-timer Gate Speed (8) is the program favorite.

Keys: Our Romance and Rosey Sky, race 1; Surface, race 3; Foray, race 7.
