Princess Warrior, who injured her left front leg and was pulled up from the first race at Churchill Downs on Friday, will have surgery on Monday, trainer Kenny McPeek said.
Rood and Riddle orthopedic surgeon Larry Bramlage is to perform the surgery. Her racing career is finished.
Winner of the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere at Churchill Downs last fall, Princess Warrior was running in fourth in a five-horse allowance field on the grass when the injury occurred. She was successfully pulled up by jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. and left via horse ambulance.
McPeek shared via Twitter that the surgery calls for her to have her sesamoid bones fused and that Bramlage gives her "a 75% chance to become a broodmare. Her recuperation will take time and we are committed to giving her every chance."
McPeek also reported Saturday that Restless Rider is being freshened due to body soreness after a poor race in the Kentucky Oaks, in which she was 12th, beaten 34 lengths. The performance was out of character for the high-performing filly, who had won the Grade 1 Alcibiades last fall and who had been second in the Grade 1 Ashland in her only other race at 3.
He mentioned the Grade 1 Coaching Club July 20 or the Grade 1 Alabama Aug. 17 as possible summer targets. Both races are at Saratoga.
