Ten-pound apprentice Avery Whisman put in a determined ride aboard Sventatsic to win the fourth race at Pimlico on Thursday.
Sventastic was buried down at the rail inside two horses for the entire stretch run but Whisman kept persevering and was up in deep stretch for the win. Sventastic who is trained by Ann Merryman, paid $49.20 in the conditioned $5,000 claiming sprint.
Whisman is now 5 for 79 in his career and on a bit of a hot streak. He has won with three of his last six mounts.
Whisman's fifth winner means his one-year apprenticeship officially begins. When he rides Thursday evening in the seventh race at Penn National, he will only get a seven-pound weight allowance
