Tacitus, elevated to third in the Kentucky Derby, worked a half-mile in 48.41 seconds Saturday morning over the Belmont Park main track as he prepares for a start in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on June 8.
Working at about 6:15 a.m. and in company with the older stakes winner Multiplier, Tacitus, on the outside, started a length back. He joined his workmate by the quarter pole after an opening quarter in 24.59 seconds. The two were basically together through the lane with Multiplier about a head in front at the wire.
Tacitus galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.39 and began edging away from his workmate on the double gallop out which he accomplished in 1:14.84.
During the first hour of training on this sensational spring morning, the main track was very fast.
