Lone Star Park near Dallas opens its raceweek Saturday with a spotlight on 2-year-olds. There are a pair of maiden special weights for juveniles on the nine-race card that gets underway at 2:35 p.m. Central. It is sunny and in the 80s and the main track is anticipated as fast and the turf, firm. Lone Star's raceweek continues through Monday.

The first 2-year-old race goes as the fourth, and the maiden special weight at four and a half furlongs is restricted to juveniles bred in Texas. Cafe Gold (7), from the barn of trainer Bret Calhoun, figures to get good support, as does Good Judgement (1) from the barn of trainer Steve Asmussen. Both are by stallions who get winners early. Another to consider at a price is Colonel Bowie (6), whose sire, Early Flyer, gets 23 percent juvenile debut winners. Jimmy Dodwell trains Colonel Bowie, and the Dodwell family has long been known for its success with young horses here in the Southwest.
The other 2-year-old race on the program goes as the eighth, and the maiden special weight will be run over four and a half furlongs. Gold Pilot (1), for Calhoun, must deal with the rail draw, but is by a stallion who is getting 16 percent juvenile debut winners. In addition, this one's dam was a multiiple stakes winner and from one foal to race she has produced a winner. Another of interest is Midknightwar, a February foal by Violence, who gets 22 percent juvenile debut winners.
