Hit the Seam, the 5-2 second choice, was essentially pulled up in Saturday's first race at five furlongs on turf, when the gelding's left rein broke costing jockey Mario Gutierrez the ability to steer his mount, stewards said.
Hit the Seam drifted out badly on the turn when leading. He made the turn safely but lost all chance.
The race was won by Mr. Brownstone ($21.60) by a half-length over 13-1 Fredrikstad, but only after the final quarter-mile was the subject of an objection by Joe Talamo, who rode the runner-up. He alleged Mr. Brownstone drifted in, putting Fredrikstad in a tight situation.
The stewards ruled that Fredrikstad was in tight quarters nearing the stretch when 30-1 Tiger On Your Six drifted to the inside. They held Mr. Brownstone blameless in unanimous decision.
