Handicapping and betting, Sunday at Santa Anita …
Race 1 – Turf sprint for maiden fillies and mares, top choice Mo Forza (7) is an Uncle Mo debut filly from San Luis Rey Downs; second preference Snappish (5) had trouble finishing fourth in a better-than-looked debut. DRF Formulator has a difference of opinion. Past five years: Mo Forza trainer 1-for-24 first-time starters turf sprints, Snappish trainer 0-for-31 second-start maidens. This handicapper likes both 7-2 shots, anway.
Race 2 – Thanks Mr. Eidson (6) might be a hunch play following the dismissal of Santa Anita racing director Dan Eidson on Thursday. But the horse to beat in this 2-year-old statebred maiden race is Raging Whiskey (5), who is believed to have more speed than he showed in his third-place debut.
Race 4 – Phantom Boss (5) is even-money in this 2-year-old (open) maiden race, based on his fine runner-up debut. He missed by a neck, finished more than five lengths clear of third, and should be tough second time out. Side Street Dave (1) made the Daily Racing Form “horses to watch” list following a promising runner-up debut. Thought he had speed, perhaps he will show it this time.
Race 5 – Gregorian Chant (2) and Neptune’s Storm (6) stand out in the $150k Cinema Stakes for 3-year-olds on turf. Two good colts in peak form.
Race 6 – Justin’s Quest (6) trained well since an even-money debacle in February. He was gelded since, posted sharp works, and enters as a logical favorite based on previous runner-up finishes. Second-time starter Commanding Chief (1) is likely to improve with a race under his belt. At 6-1, he is a “must use.”
Race 7 – Seaside Dancer (7) seeks her fourth straight, Miss Flawless (8) drops from graded stakes, and 12-1 shot Norwegian (1) has an upset chance if the speed backs up. Respect the favorite Seaside Dancer, but would include all three in multi-race wagers.
Race 8 – Five-horse filly-mare allowance sprint, likely pacesetter Uno Trouble Maker (1) is 7-5 and looks it. Since mid-April, favorites are 16-for-30 at six furlongs.
Race 9 – Would not blame anyone for shading Honeyfromthesouth (10), who lost four straight maiden races at odds-on. But she has never raced this short, and if she handles turf should be gone in this five-furlong sprint. She is 5-2, will settle for 2-1 as one of the most likely winners on the card.
Economy-sized pick 3 (eight combinations), races 4-6: Side Street Dave (1) and Phantom Boss (5), with Gregorian Chant (2) and Neptune’s Storm (6), with Commanding Chief (1) and Justin’s Quest (6). Straight play: Honeyfromthesouth at 2-1 in the finale.
