The 10-day Thoroughbred meet (June 29 through July 14) begins Saturday at Los Alamitos. Things to know …
Race 1 – Fittingly, the meet begins with a $20k maiden-claiming race. Los Al runs more bottom-level maiden-claiming races than any race – 29 of 163 races (17 percent) the past two summer meets were maiden-20’s. Class-drop favorite Scrappy Deville (1) is the horse to beat for trainer Leonard Powell, who won with five of his last seven maiden-claiming favorites at all tracks.
Race 2 – Debut runner-up Golden Star Lady (1), scratched last Sunday after Santa Anita ousted trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, returns for trainer Ron Ellis. Golden Star Lady’s main rival in this special-weight for 2-year-old fillies is sharp-working top choice firster Powerfulattraction (4). Looks like a two-horse race.
Race 3 – Knust (4) and Boy Howdy (6) are legit favorites in this $8k claiming starter allowance at five furlongs, while 5-1 shot St. Reno (7) has run races that are fast enough.
Race 4 – The $2 pick six is a traditional 70-30 split (main payoff, consolation). Thankfully, Los Al has resisted the single-ticket jackpot scheme that all but ruined the pick six at other tracks. This maiden-20 is a split of race 1; Spectator’s Dream (7) is the one to catch. The favorite is turf-to-dirt dropper Rightful (2). The past two Los Al summer meets, favorites are 13-for-29 (44 percent) in maiden-20s.
Race 5 – Giddymeister (1) looks like lone speed in this restricted $16k claiming sprint. The 8-5 favorite should be gone as most probable winner on the card.
Race 6 – Platinum Equity (7) enters this $16k claiming starter allowance with superior speed figures; his odds are likely to drop below his 9-5 morning line. He faces a good rival in 5-2 top choice Camino de Estrella (4), who seeks his third straight.
Race 7 – Implicitly (4) gate to wire? He is the speed of this restricted $16k claiming race, while dropper Pleasant d’Oro (5) is the “class.” Hootie (3) also drops.
Race 8 – King Abner (3) misfired two weeks ago, but he can crush the $100k Bertrando Stakes if he reproduces his highly rated runner-up finishes March 3 or April 28. This is the career finale for 11-year-old Soi Phet (1), who won the Bertrando in 2014 and 2018.
Race 9 – Rolinga (5), a nine-start maiden, figures as a top contender, while program favorite Appolina (9) might prefer the faster Los Al surface over the slow Santa Anita surface. Crazy Sexy Munny (7) is racing into form; she has a hot trainer-jockey combo in her favor. Doug O’Neill and Martin Garcia are 9-for-22 the past two months.
Low-odds keys: Giddymeister, race 5; King Abner, race 8. Higher-odds speculations: St. Reno, race 3; Hootie, race 7.
