Hastings-based Good Luck to You looks like the one to beat in the $75,000 Shirley Vargo Handicap. She is coming off back-to-back runner-up finishes behind Here's Hannah who was the Horse of the Year in British Columbia last year. Her trainer Phil Hall thinks Good Luck to You will thrive running on a mile track for the fist time. How she will handle the muddy track remains to be seen. Raider heads the local contingent in the one-mile race for fillies and mares.
Trainer Tim Rycroft holds a strong hand with Trooper John and Stone Carver in the $50,000 Fred Jones Handicap for 3-year-olds and up. Stone Carver easily handled his stablemate going 7 furlongs over a muddy track in the Spangled Jimmy but has yet to win going a middle-distance. He hasn't lost in three starts at Century Mile, though, and his breeding suggests he should be able to carry his speed the 1 1/16 miles distance of the Fred Jones. Trooper John can run all day and is perfect at the distance. However, he seemed to have a hard time handling the muddy surface last time and it looks like he'll have to deal with the same kind of track.
