Los Alamitos will run seven races on Friday's daytime Thoroughbred program, a reflection on the lower number of race-ready horses in Southern California. Los Alamitos intended to run eight races, but entries were slower-than-expected on Sunday when post positions were drawn.
Racing secretary Bob Moreno said seven-race programs on weekdays and eight-race programs on weekends may occur before the brief summer meeting ends on July 14.
The track eliminated two days of racing on June 27-28 earlier in June out of concern over the number of race ready horses. The meeting was originally scheduled for 12 days and is now scheduled for 10 days.
Los Alamitos does not have a turf course, which affects the number of races that can be carded.
Santa Anita was affected by field size issues at its spring-summer meeting. The track cancelled nine programs on Thursdays from late April to late June because of concern over the available number of runners.
Del Mar officials insist they will run a five-day per week schedule from Wednesdays through Sundays during the summer meeting from July 17 to Sept. 2, but said the track could run fewer races per day to meet that schedule.
