Both 2-year-old maiden winners opening weekend at Los Alamitos earned relatively low figures. History suggests both need improvement to repeat in Del Mar stakes.

The filly Powerfulattraction earned a 61 Beyer winning her debut June 29; her time for five furlongs (:58.71) was second-slowest of seven races at the distance. Trainer Peter Eurton said the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes on Aug. 3 at Del Mar would be her next start.

In the 28 years since Beyer Figures were first published, every Sorrento winner previously earned a 65 or higher. Powerfulattraction, by first-crop sire Commissioner, is likely to improve from her workmanlike 61. Question is, how much will she improve?

The colt Schrodinger earned a 69 Beyer winning his debut June 30; his time for five furlongs (:57.21) was second-fastest. Trainer Simon Callaghan said the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes on Aug. 10 at Del Mar would be his next start.

The past 28 years, all but one Best Pal winner previously earned a 73 Beyer or higher. Schrodinger, by Justin Phillip, is almost certain to improve from his 69. He won with plenty in the tank, and should benefit stretching out to six furlongs in the Best Pal.

From a historical speed-figure perspective, Powerfulattraction faces a tall order against Amalfi Sunrise (88 Beyer) and Comical (75) in the Sorrento. Schrodinger, however, looms a top contender in the Best Pal. Potential rivals include Phantom Boss (69-78-70) and Fore Left (70-69).
