Los Al Saturday preview

The ground is shaking in California, but racing continues Saturday at Los Alamitos. Preview …

Races 1-2 – A pair of five-horse fields led by Ps Bettin On You (2) and Loving Moment (2). Favorites are 6-for-10 this meet in quintets.

Belmont Park, race 7 (Belmont Oaks, 1:30 PT) – How good is Concrete Rose (4)? Considering that she defeated favorite Newspaperofrecord (2) by nearly four lengths last out, Concrete Rose is mighty enticing at 3-1.

Race 3 – Traffic Stopper (5) would give trainer Brian Koriner his sixth straight winner with a debut 2-year-old, dating to last year. The California-bred daughter of Cross Traffic has worked well.  Program favorite Cheap Cheap Cheap (6) finished third both starts.

Race 4 – Wishful (4) is legit chalk in this Cal-bred allowance sprint, but 6-1 longshot Emmy and I (6) is tempting due to a shortage of speed in this small field.

Race 5 – The issue with top choice Noor Khan (5) is he produced no speed in his debut. Although he ran well, and second-start maidens sometimes show more speed, his lack of gas tempers enthusiasm just a little. Positive workout reports from clocker Andy Harrington on Koriner-trained debut 3-year-old Grinningeartoear (3).

Race 6 – Conquest Smartee (10) “should” win this maiden-20 sprint, but thought the same thing about another John Sadler-trained maiden dropper on Friday. Darpa finished off the board. Perhaps one has little to do with the other, but sometimes you get gun-shy. Worth consideration: 6-1 second-time starter Go Sammy Go (2) and eight-start maiden Victor’s Show (3).

Race 7 – A deep field entered this $25k claiming starter allowance route. Fawree (4) won nicely last out over a field that included three next-out winners. Fawree is listed at a generous 7-2, though one could make a case for at least five others including Cabin John (8) and Sheer Flattery (9).

Race 8 – It might have been a mistake to endorse comebacker Emtech (3) in this entry-level allowance sprint. He is fast, but his works are not great. McKale (1) was only prepping two weeks ago, he should improve second start back with blinkers back on.

Race 9 – Plans call for front-runner Yuvetsi (6) to be taken off the pace in the Grade 2 Great Lady M. Stakes for filly-mare sprinters. That could put Danuska’s My Girl (4) on a clear lead. Top choice Anonymity (3) is working well for her comeback and should get a great trip positioned second, while off-the-pace favorite Marley’s Freedom (2) is the “fastest” on numbers and the “class” with five graded wins. Good race.

Trivia: It was 40 years ago today (July 6, 1979) that the mare Great Lady M. won an allowance race at Hollywood Park. She retired having won 14 of 58, and as a broodmare produced the “Iron Lady” – 1986 Horse of the Year, Lady’s Secret.

First post Saturday at Los Alamitos, 1 p.m.
