Bad spill in race 4 at Monmouth Park on Sunday.
Metallic, ridden by Jose Ferrer, broke down while racing in second position in the five-horse field nearing the far turn of the mile race for $12,500 claimers, throwing Ferrer straight down. The Best Candy, ridden by Isaac Castillo, fell over Metallic.
Ferrer was taken from the track on a stretcher. Castillo came back to ride in the next race.
According to the Monmouth Park publicity department, Dr. Angelo Chinnici, the track’s medical director, said Ferrer had a possible concussion and suffered superficial facial lacerations.
Metallic, who was racing for trainer Jose Delgado, was euthanized. The Best Candy, trained by Jorge Navarro, was vanned from the track.
Ferrer, 55, was the leading rider at Monmouth in 2018. He is second in this year's standings.
Ferrer was badly injured in a September 2017 spill at Delaware Park, when he broke eight ribs, fractured two vertebrae, and had a collapsed lung.
