A cloudy/humid day, with a strong south-west wind, for the 11-race card. Four races are on turf, which is firm. Lane 2 for the inner, and lane 5 for the main.
The G3 Ontario Matron kicks off the late Pick 4 as race eight. Miss Mo Mentum rallied strongly last time out to win the Trillium over several of these, which was her second G3 stakes triumph on the local Tapeta.
Trainer Catherine Day Phillips, who won Friday's Saratoga stakes feature with Mr Havercamp, sends out two 4yo daughters of Curlin, Katie Baby and Dixie Moon. Katie Baby should be forwardly placed under Eurico Da Silva, who's also been the regular rider of '18 Woodbine Oaks winner Dixie Moon. Emma-Jayne Wilson picks up the mount on the latter. Don't assume that Da Silva had his choice.
The comebacker Sense of Bravery has been working lights-out for trainer Kevin Attard, and should lead the way in the 1 1/16-mile route.
The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover is $17K for the nightcap, a $10K maiden sprint on the grass. In this new era of cheaper turf racing at Woodbine, handicappers can no longer dismiss horses with poor turf records in such events, because the majority of those starts probably came in tougher company. Shishka's turf debut in her penultimate race in a $25K route was a distant seventh-place finish, but when she dropped to this level most recently in a turf sprint, she rallied for third.
