Ridden beautifully by Sophie Doyle, Street Band ran down favored Guarana to win the Grade 1, $1,000,000 Cotillion Stakes.
There was a very fast pace in the early portion of the Cotillion as Jaywalk was intent on snatching the lead from the swift Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress.
Jaywalk doesn't seem like the same horse that dominated the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies last year, however, and Serengeti Empress doesn't have the same pop when rated off the lead so that left Guarana in a comfortable position just off Jaywalk and Bellafina. Guarana shot to the lead at the top of the stretch, but couldn't hold of Street Band, who benefitted from that hot pace up and a lovely ride.
Near the back early, Doyle deftly split horses on the backstretch with Street Band, angled four wide in the lane and wore down Guarana, who was far from disgraced in defeat.
This win must vault Street Band into the top three of the divisional rankings along with Guarana and Dunbar Road.
