Trainer Brad Cox said Tuesday that Owendale is scheduled to run in the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby on Sunday at Remington Park. He also plans to start Mr. Misunderstood in the $100,000 Remington Green on the same program. Entries for the races will be taken on Wednesday.
Owendale won the Grade 3 Ohio Derby in June and in his most recent start was fifth in the Grade 1 Travers on Aug. 24 at Saratoga.
"We thought this was a good spot - obviously, a [straight] 3-year-old race," Cox said. "I'm just hoping it doesn't come up as tough as the Travers. I do think it's coming up really great. From what the probbales look like, it looks like a really good race, more like a Grade 2 as opposed to a Grade 3."
Others expected include Mucho Gusto, a multiple graded stakes winner who was third in the Travers, and Long Range Toddy, who won a division of the Grade 2 Rebel at Oaklawn. Grade 2 Jim Dandy winner Tax also is in the mix for the race, according to reporting by David Grening.
Cox said Florent Geroux has the mount on Owendale, who is owned by Rupp Racing.
Mr. Misunderstood, a Grade 2 winner for Flurry Racing Stable, won the Grade 3 River City Handicap at the mile and an eighth distance of the Remington Green last November at Churchill Downs.
