California invader BOWIES HERO emerged from mid-pack Saturday to win the 34th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile on the Keeneland turf.
Ridden by Flavien Prat for trainer Phil D’Amato and a three-way partnership of owners, Bowies Hero drew clear in the final 70 yards of what had devolved into a mad scramble. DIAMOND OOPS grimly held second in a tight three-way photo for second, followed closely by SUEDOIS and FIRST PREMIO. The top five order in a full field of 14 was 5-7-12-9-11.
Bowies Hero, a 5-year-old Kentucky-bred horse by Artie Schiller, finished the one-mile distance 1:34.20 and earned a Win and You’re In berth into the Nov. 2 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita. He now has won eight of 21 starts.
The $2 exacta (5-7) paid $214.80, the $1 trifecta (5-7-12) returned $1,940.80, and the 10-cent superfecta (5-7-12-9) was worth $2,990.10.
