BLUE PRIZE got first run on heavily favored MIDNIGHT BISOU when pulling an 8-1 upset Saturday in the 36th running of the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Joe Bravo, Blue Prize prevailed by 1 1/2 lengths over Midnight Bisou, the even-money favorite in a field of 11 fillies and mares; the top two rallied from well back. It was another 3 1/4 lengths back to SERENGETI EMPRESS, who led most of the way.
Blue Prize gave trainer Ignacio Correas the greatest victory of his career in North America when finishing the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:50.50 over a fast track. The 6-year-old Argentinian-bred mare is owned by the Merribelle Stable.
The winner paid $19.80.
The $2 exacta (11-4) paid $42.20, the $1 trifecta (11-4-9) returned $261.50, and the 10-cent superfecta (11-4-9-2) was worth $217.12.
Brad Free will have the full Distaff recap up on drf.com before long.
