Vino Rosso won the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic by four and one-quarter lengths over favorite McKinize on Saturday at Santa Anita.
The Classic was the 14th and final Breeders’ Cup race, but a safe ending to the weekend was not to be. The longshot Mongolian Groom, supplemented to the Classic for a $200,000 fee, sustained a severe injury to his left leg in deep stretch. He was pulled up and vanned off.
Vino Rosso, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Irad Ortiz, paid $11.20. Higher Power finished third, followed across the wire by, in order, Elate, Math Wizard, Seeking the Soul, Code of Honor, Yoshida, pacesetter War of Will and Owendale. Mongolian Groom did not finish.
Vino Rosso earlier this year won the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita. In his most recent start, he crossed the wire first in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park but was disqualified for interference and placed second.
The final time for the mile and one-quarter Classic was 2:02.80.
