Lone Star Park has received approval from the City of Grand Prairie for a number of facility improvements, according to a press release. The track plans to add video surveillance cameras in all barns, a new "Duralock" moveable turf rail and a "cooling down" area for horses about 100 yards past the finish line, featuring fans and cool water. The track also plans to renovate some stalls and dormitories and contruct round pens on the backstretch.
The improvemtents stem from a Nov. 4 initial agreement between the track and the Grand Prairie Sports Facilities and Development Corporation to share in the cost of improvements, according to the press release the Texas Thoroughbred Association issued applauding the move.
“The City of Grand Prairie has been an integral part of Lone Star Park’s success from the track’s inception,” Scott Wells, president and general manager of Lone Star Park, said in the press release. “Their leadership has enabled us to make much needed renovations on the frontside in areas open to the public, from the suites levels to the ground floor. This move toward improving conditions for horsemen and horses is just another example of our mutual commitment to keeping Lone Star Park a truly world class facility.”
Ron Jensen, the mayor of Grand Prairie, also was cited in the press release.
“The City of Grand Prairie and Lone Star Park management have a unique and productive partnership," he said. "Thanks to the actions of the Texas Legislature this past session, horse racing in Texas is back on an upward trajectory. We want Lone Star Park to lead the way in providing the best and safest facilities for our customers, our horsemen and their horses.”
Lone Star Park spring meet for Thoroughbreds is expected to have increased purses, according to the press release. Sam Houston recently announced purse increses for its meet that opens Jan. 10.
