Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M., which puts on its $1 million Land of Enchantment card Nov. 27, has been instucted by the New Mexico Racing Commission to close its stable area to horses from Remington Park in Oklahoma City until further notice, according to an official from the agency. The move comes after a confirmed positive for equine herpesvirius last week at Remington. The same policy is to be enacted at the Downs at Albuquerque, which remains open as a training center. Zia is the lone track racing right now in New Mexico.
"The New Mexico Racing Commission just spoke with Zia Park officials, ordering them to shut the stable gate down to any horses originating from Remington Park," Izzy Trejo, executive director of the commission, told Daily Racing Form on Thursday.
He said the decision was made in conjuction with veterinarians with the New Mexico Livestock Board. It is for protection of horses, the interests of horsemen and racing in the state, said Trejo.
It was unclear Thursday how the move might impact entries for the seven stakes on the Land of Enchantment card due to date parameters of the 14-day quarantine of the Remington barn in which the equine herpesvirus case horse resided. The 3-year-old filly was euthanized on Nov. 12, and EHV-1 confirmed by tests Nov. 14. There are nine horses in the seven stakes that last raced at Remington or had a recent work at Remington.
Delta Downs in Vinton, La., also has closed its stable area to horses from Remington until further notice, said Chris Warren, director of racing for the track. The policy was put in place today, Thursday, Warren told Daily Racing Form.
Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., which does not start its meet until January but opens its stable area Monday, also will not be accepting horses from Remington at the present time, according to an official with the track.
